Known as a nécessaire de voyage, the case features a luxurious blue velvet-lined interior that houses various toiletry accouterments, including stunning opaline glass containers and an array of manicure tools. A secret velvet-lined drawer extends from the side of the nécessaire, providing a three-compartment space for storing one's more valuable items. Ingeniously designed, this case is both practical and beautiful. As travel became more and more fashionable in the 18th and 19th centuries, vanity sets such as this evolved into highly personalized symbols of wealth among young men and women.
