Antique Austrian Figural Tobacco Jar by Johann Maresch

About the Item

One of the most charming examples I have seen from the Austrian artist, Johann Maresch. Created from painted terracotta, the jar is in the form of a barrel with a Dachshund coming out of the top. Dating to c.1900, it remains in excellent condition measuring 5 1/2" in diameter x 7 1/2" tall. Fully signed on the underside. Johann Maresch (1821 - 1914) is known for Ceramic and terracota figures. Johann Maresch (1821-1914) joined Adolf Bähr as commercial director in 1845, who in 1841 took up the first production of household articles made from siderolith in Aussig. Their manner of dress is similar, even down to the similarities in the colours used to paint them. She carries a bright orange-red urn...
