Antique Austrian Figural Tobacco Jar by Johann Maresch
About the Item
One of the most charming examples I have seen from the Austrian artist, Johann Maresch.
Created from painted terracotta, the jar is in the form of a barrel with a Dachshund coming out of the top.
Dating to c.1900, it remains in excellent condition measuring 5 1/2" in diameter x 7 1/2" tall. Fully signed on the underside.
Johann Maresch (1821 - 1914) is known for Ceramic and terracota figures. Johann Maresch (1821-1914) joined Adolf Bähr as commercial director in 1845, who in 1841 took up the first production of household articles made from siderolith in Aussig.

- A pair of Orientalist terracotta figures by Johann MareschBy Johann MareschLocated in London, GBA pair of Orientalist terracotta figures by Johann Maresch Austrian, Late 19th Century Man: height 49cm, width 20cm, depth 15cm Woman: height 48cm, width 20cm, depth 15cm Depicting a woman and a man of similar appearance, age, dress, and in a similarly spritely, lively, and engaging manner, these figures were made by Johann Maresch in the late nineteenth century, c.1880. A skilled Austrian maker, similar in output to the more famous Friedrich Goldscheider, Maresch gave these figures a tangible vitality and energy to their representation, showing them as hard-working yet undaunted and undimmed by their labours.
