About the Item

The principal goal of this mechanics is to snuff the candle at the marked times always proportioned with the length of the carbonized wick and that by the effect even of the combustion of the candle and its shortening. Sir Felix arrived to this goal by the following process. It locked up its candle in a gun, about in the same manner that the candles of the lanterns of car are placed. This gun is finished at its higher end by a species of cup which has the advantage of containing tallow and of preventing it from spreading itself, so that the candle does not run, and that the tallow totality is consumed.A spiral spring enclosed in a barrel by means of a small chain continuously tends to make mount the candle to measurement of its combustion. This spring while developing made turn a wheel which the circle hollowed out in equal portions makes start from moment in moment a trigger of which the effect is to make leave small limps a mouchette which comes to cut the wick and carries the mouchure which being locked up in the moment even does not let see any smoke nor to feel any odor. These effects are carried out with such a speed that the eyes have sorrow to see them. Mr. Felix benefitted from the movement of this same wheel to give to his machine of other faculties which can be useful. It adapted an alarm clock to it and by calculating the duration of the candle, this alarm clock sounds at marked hours. A candle-snuffer comes to snuff the candle at the end of time as one determined. The use of this candlestick requires any care, no preparation, the only action to introduce the candle into its gun tightens the spring and puts the machine in a position to make its function.
