Antique Candelabras A Pair of Elegant Sterling Silver Candle Holders Hallmarked

About the Item

A pair of elegant and pure sterling silver 925 large antique hallmarked three light candelabra in the late 19th century taste. These fine candelabra have shaped oval bases and fluted stems. All the nozzles are fully detachable to assist in cleaning. They are also all hallmarked tested and original. The branches terminate in faceted spool-shaped sockets with a detachable nozzle. There is a further central socket with an alternate detachable finial and nozzle, which can turn the candelabra into a two light. The branches pull-off and one can use them as candlesticks alone. The candelabra are created in Britain and hallmarked of the Martin Hall & Co (1854), sterling silver proof as a lion mark the symbol of anchor which represents the city of Birmingham and the year of production, on the bases, branches, nozzles and finials. The bases are filled with the original green velevt inserts. A very high quality pair and they have the benefit of being three light (whereas the majority of candelabra are two light). This Candelabras are made and marked by Martin Hall & Co (1854), The origin of the firm is in the partnership established in 1820 in Sheffield by Henry Wilkinson and John Roberts who traded as Wilkinson & Roberts. Wilkinson left the business in 1836 and in 1846 John Roberts entered in partnership with Ebenezer Hall (his apprentice in 1836) under the style Roberts & Hall. In 1854 entered into the partnership Richard Martin (of Martin Brothers & Naylor) and Joshua Hall (brother of Ebenezer Hall) under the style Martin, Hall & Co. In 1866 the firm was converted into a Ltd. The factory was active at Shrewsbury Works, Broad Street Park, Sheffield with showrooms in London (where they were listed as manufacturing silversmiths and electroplated manufacturers, silver, plated and steel cutlers), Sydney, Birmingham and Glasgow. The firm participated to the 1851 Great Exhibition, the Internation Exhibition (1862), the Sydney Exhibition (1879), the Melboune Exhibition (1881) and the 1915 British Industries Fair. Martin Hall & Co (1854) Dimensions: height (to centre) 51.25 cm, height (to sides) 46.75 cm, height (candlesticks alone) 30.75 cm; weight (branches) 63 troy oz
