About the Item
Magnificent antique boat-shaped candlestick, beautifully decorated with brass grapevine leaves, as well as 5 white opaque glass lilies. Gorgeous patina. Charming ornamented base, and elegantly constructed, like a lush flower bouquet with branched opaline flowers, slender leaves, grapes and with 5 light pipes for traditional candles.
Also known as thanksgiving candlesticks, it dates from around 1900, and originates from a Catholic Church in France. They were donated to the church, often as gifts from the church’s parishioners or wealthy families, as thanks for a cure or a good harvest. Similar candelabras still stand in Catholic churches, often at the altar or in small niches around the church.
Perfect for the mantelpiece or on the windowsill. As it is an altar stand, it looks most beautiful in front and is flat at the back.
