An Art Deco Iron Hanukkah Menorah, France Circa 1925

About the Item

This Art Deco iron Hanukkah menorah from France circa 1925 combines the streamlined, geometric aesthetics, high-quality craftsmanship, and innovative design of the Art Deco period with the rich traditions of Jewish ritual. The Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes (International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts) was a world's fair held in Paris, France, from April to October 1925. The term "art deco" was derived by shortening the words "arts décoratifs." Visitors to the exhibition were entranced by the "moderne" design, and businessmen were quick to return to their factories and incorporate the styles they saw at the fair into their own wares. Among the exhibitors was Edgar Brandt, an innovative master of ironwork. To the casual observer, this menorah may appear to have been done in the Arts and Crafts style; upon close examination, however, it is determined that this is an unmistakable piece of French art deco ironwork. The person who fabricated this massive menorah clearly was influenced by Brandt, as the beaten-edged, flattened scrollwork and applied patina are features that are prominent in some of his works. The thumbprint-depression-styled base is pure French deco. As was the fashion in prewar Europe among the Jewish upper class, many decorated their homes with multiple menorahs. It's easy to envision a wealthy Jew in the south of France hiring a skilled artisan familiar with iron to forge a Brandt-like menorah for celebrating the holiday outdoors, on the terrace of his home. This menorah is a rare example of French art deco Judaica. The historical context of 1920s France, a time of significant cultural and artistic innovation, adds to the piece’s significance.
