Barbedienne Gilt Bronze Candelabra

$34,500

About

This rare and dramatic pair of Napoleon III gilt bronze candelabra were expertly cast and designed by the celebrated French bronzeur Ferdinand Barbedienne. Masterfully crafted, the candelabra are exemplary of the Rococo aesthetic. Organic swirls and curves of acanthus leaves intertwine to form the ten arms of each candelabrum. The rich, highly sculptured forms lend a sense of movement to the fixtures, which are seemingly held aloft by the putti resting at their bases. The exceptional pieces are a testament to the artistry of one of the 19th century’s most celebrated artisans. Barbedienne was one of the most sought after founders of late 19th-century France, and carried contracts with some of Paris’ greatest sculptors. In partnership with Achille Collas, who invented a method for making reductions of sculptures, Barbedienne produced works by both his contemporaries such as Antoine-Louis Barye and masters like Michelangelo and Luca della Robbia. Today, pieces hailing from this foundry are extremely sought after by collectors. circa 1860 Measures: 32" high x 18" wide x 16" deep.
