French 19th Century Bronze and Champleve Candelabras

About the Item

This unusual pair of 19th century three branch candelabra is made of bronze and features Champleve insets. The French antique pair is flat-backed, made to be used against the wall, as on a mantel, and has bronze candle cups and bobeches of leaves. The champleve is gorgeous and features a light blue background with red, orange, and darker blue pattern work. The name comes from the French word for ‘raised field,’ and comes from an enameling process in which cells are etched into the surface of a metal object and filled with vitreous enamel then fired. Finally, the pair is adorned with acanthus leaves on the scroll stems. The piece is part of the collection from The French Antique Shop, a fourth generation antique store in the heart of the French Quarter of New Orleans. A space that was created and curated at first by Marie and Marcelle and Granet. Their first shop was located in the heart of Paris, and opened in 1919 after they migrated to Paris from Romania post World War I. Shortly after establishing themselves in Paris, as a Jewish family they were forced to flee in the late 1930s before World War II. Marie and Marcel opened up their shop in New Orleans in 1939, the city in which this antique collection has grown and continues to flourish. The store is now run by the third and fourth generation, Marc, Michael, and Brian Friedlander, and is a highly curated space filled with rare antiquities, fine antique lighting, eclectic fixtures, and everything in between. We have imported all the antique items in our collection directly from France.
