About the Item

An impressive hand forged Hanukkah lamp inspired by Brutalist aesthetic. Hand crafted in Jerusalem, Israel circa 1960, the iron lamp stands with nine rustic candleholders in the shape of a harp. The shamash stands tallest in stature, featuring uniquely minimalistic and raw characteristics to highlight the relationship of texturally organic materials. The shamash stands with a seemingly adorned, cylindrical piece, while each candleholder is shaped to create a dense yet fluid mannerism within alignment. Each candleholder is adorned with a cylindrical piece that is smaller in appearance compared to the shamash. This Hanukkah lamp is supported by a sturdy iron base to uphold the harmonious juxtaposition with softness and density. The Hanukkah lamp commemorates the number of days that the Temple lantern blazed; the ninth, shamash, is a help candle used to light the others from right to left. The Temple’s menorah, one of its most important ritual objects, burning for one day instead, the flame stayed alight for eight days, until a new supply of oil could be found, which made this the basis for the festival of lights celebration of Hanukkah. David Palombo (1920-1966) was a sculptor and painter born in Turkey and immigrated to Israel with his parents in 1923. In 1940 he began his studies at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, and from 1942 was a student of sculptor Ze’ev Ben-Zvi. For a period of time, Palombo was an assistant at Ben-Zvi’s studio and later taught at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. Palombo’s known works include the memorial building gates to Yad Vashem (1960) and the gates to the Knesset. The latter were created shortly before his premature death, caused by a motorcycle accident in which Palombo hit a chain used to block off the entrance of a Haredi neighborhood of Yamin Moshe, on the eve of Shabbat. Every item in Menorah Galleries is accompanied by a lifetime “Certificate of Authenticity” and additional documentation and information regarding the individual artifact and its culture.
