About the Item

Mid-century candlestick holder by Hans Agne Jakobsson (circa 1950s). Brass base supports four wooden candlesticks topped by wide-candle brass receptacles. The well known designer was a master of light in all its forms. In fair overall condition with a characterful patina on the brass and some blemishing on the piece commensurate with age and use. Please enjoy the photos accompanying this listing to view its condition and aesthetic. Upon request a video of the piece may be provided. About the Artist: Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919-2009) was born in Hvadhem/Gotland, Sweden. After finishing an apprenticeship as a carpenter, he studied architecture in Gothenburg and began his career as an Industrial designer at General Motors. Subsequently he became an assistant to the prominent furniture designers Carl Malmsten & Werner West. In 1951 he founded his own company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, at Markaryd. There he not only created lighting design but also candlesticks & furniture. Influenced by nature, especially in the southern part of Sweden with its glittering lakes & vast, dark woods, Jakobsson developed innovative ways to compose light & illumination. He was a talented designer who experimented with brass, iron, glass, fabric and surprisingly, wood shavings. He mastered direction and colour of light like only very few people could. He cleverly designed his pieces to eliminate glaring bulbs and crude decorations while combining practicality with a sense of wellbeing. Like his famous colleague, Poul Henningsen, Jakobsson counts among the light designers who became known for their attenuated, soft lighting. His iconic designs based on wood shavings were produced by Ellysett AB. Dimensions: H 19 cm / 7.5" W 49 cm / 19.3" D 15 cm / 5.9".
