Pair Late 19th Century French Tole Painted Bronze Urn & Flower Form Candelabra

About the Item

This pair of candelabra made in the form of urns holding floral arrangements are French and were cast in bronze in the 1870s. It’s possible that at one time they were gilded but they now are tole painted and appear to have been so for some time. The surface paint has a lot of craquelure and wear with extensive surface aging and use but this only adds to their interest and visual appeal. The urns are cast with simple bodies bisected with a large raised band at the center decorated with a round cartouche surrounded by swags and volutes. At the top of the urn, an egg and dart raised border is also cast. These two areas are painted in contrast and hand decorated in a third color to pick out details while the body of the urns are painted in a deep mottled green color. The floral arrangements are painted with the coordinating colors as the rest of the parts. Cast as two different types of flower heads and stems with leaves the pair are designed with flat backs to rest on a mantel or sideboard. The entire form is then set on a marbleized base for height and definition. The casting is very detailed and the urns and tops are quite heavy for being so open and airy. The style is best described as French Aesthetics Movement but also having as decorative elements certain aspects of the Louis XVI style as well. Pair of Patinated and Polished Bronze Renaissance Revival Candelabra
Located in Hudson, NY
This pair of candelabra made in France, circa 1880 are designed in the Renaissance Revival style. Well cast in a large number of separate parts and patinated and polished to create drama and decorative detail the pair is of a nice scale without being overly large. Cast as a central column raised on a pyramidal pierced base. The base is centered by grotesque masks and foliate sprays raised up on feet. The shaft leads up to four large branched arms also cast with corresponding foliate sprays issuing from more grotesques. The combination of color and casting create a lively play of light.
