Pair of Bronze French Louis XVI Style Figural Candelabra After Clodion
About the Item
A pair of Clodion inspired figural candelabra of the highest quality gilt and patinated chased bronze. Each show a standing classically draped semi-nude maiden with a hoof footed infant satyr standing behind and pulling on the maidens' robes for attention.
One of the maidens is an allegory to bacchante evident from the grape bunches in her hair and a jug of spilt wine at her feet. The other maiden is presumably also allegorical. Both maidens are holding aloft a gilded cornucopia from which stem three swirling candle arms around a central stem topped by a flame. Both are set on a gilded intricately chased circular footed base.
