Pair of French Silvered and Gilt Bronze Candelabra

About the Item

Pair of French silvered and gilt bronze candelabra French, Late 19th Century Height 64cm, width 37cm, depth 37cm Crafted in the 19th century, this pair of French candelabra exudes unmatched elegance, with their central decorative figures drawing from the renowned designs of Clodion. Meticulously sculpted from a harmonious blend of silvered and gilt bronze, they showcase outstanding quality and master craftsmanship. Each candelabra's structure supports eight luminous lights, intricately arranged on elegantly curved acanthus arms. These arms are detailed with an ornate foliate design, ending in baluster nozzles, each surrounded by ornamental foliate rings. Adding to their grandeur, classical drip pans dangle beneath, detachable and fashioned in timeless style. A central stem, detailed with elaborate patterns, rises majestically, capped with a harmonizing candle nozzle. However, the true distinction of these pieces lies at their base. One piece boasts a bacchanalian putto tenderly embracing a swan, while the other features a putto, sitting confidently atop a regal eagle, wings spread for take-off. Cast in gilt bronze for the putti and silvered bronze for the avian figures, these unique depictions captivate and intrigue, with subtle variations between the two evoking an irresistible allure. Grounded on intricately designed naturalistic bases, their stability matches their beauty. The supreme craftsmanship of these candelabra distinguishes them from other pieces of the era, echoing the ornate splendour that characterized the decorative arts of their time. Beyond their functional design, the rare fusion of bacchanalian putto and bird motifs propels them into an elevated realm, making them captivating pieces of decoration that can bring charm to any interior space.
