Scandinavian modernist pine candlestick candelabra, Sweden, 1970s
About the Item
A sculptural Scandinavian candelabra crafted from solid pinewood by an unidentified Swedish artist in the 1970s. Signed "HK" beneath the base. Features an organically shaped foot composed of spheres, supporting seven candleholders.
Pine is one of the most common trees in Sweden, growing in forests across the country. In the 1940s and ’50s, modernist architects often favored more exclusive woods like rosewood, mahogany, and teak for their chairs and tables. However, in response to this trend, some designers began embracing pinewood—a material deeply rooted in Swedish peasant traditions, where it was used for everything from furniture and tableware to entire houses. Axel-Einar Hjorth incorporated pinewood into his “Sportstugemöbler” as early as the 1920s, and the material saw a resurgence in the 1970s, when rustic furniture began replacing the refined, high-end designs of previous decades.
