Swedish Mid-century Pair of Brass and Lacquered Steel Candelabra by Gunnar Ander

About the Item

Swedish Mid-century Pair of Brass and Lacquered Steel Candelabra, By Gunnar Ander, Sweden, 1955 Swedish Mid-century Pair of brass and lacquered steel candelabra are made by Gunnar Ander. This branched candle holder, or ‘ljusstake’ in Swedish, is a modern interpretation of the classic candlestick that was once found in most Swedish homes. The black lacquered metal structure is composed of 6 asymmetrical arms that share the same curve except for the central pair that are perfectly straight. The arms connect at the base in the middle and are wrapped by a sculptural brass piece. This creates a neat, seemingly gravity defying visual effect. The candles’ cups are made of brass that stand out beautifully against the black structure and are arranged at different heights, the cups make the design dynamic and organic at the same time. Mark: 'Ystad-Metall, Made in Sweden' on base. Dimensions: 10½ inches high × 11½ inches wide × 2½ inches deep (27 cm × 29 cm× 6 cm). Gunnar Ander (1927-2002) was a Swedish industrial designer, best known for his work with the lighting company, Ystad Metall. Ander was born in Helsingborg, Sweden and studied at the Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. Ander began working for Ystad Metall in the 1950s, where he quickly became the company's chief designer. His designs for Ystad Metall were characterized by a clean, functionalist aesthetic, with a focus on simple geometric shapes and high-quality materials. Some of Ander's most notable designs for Ystad Metall include the "Trombone" lamp (1959), the "Boomerang" lamp (1964), and the "Luna" lamp (1963), all of which are considered design classics. Ander's work with Ystad Metall helped to establish the company as one of Sweden's leading lighting manufacturers in the mid-twentieth century. (Ref: NY10603-mrr)
