About the Item

An Artistic Brass Hanukkah Lamp made in Israel circa 1950 reflects the cultural revival of the Jewish people living in Israel during this era. The year 1950 places this Hanukkah lamp in the early years of the State of Israel's existence. This was a period of nation-building, and immigration (Aliyah) from around the world, after the Holocaust. Emerging Israeli identity and pride in Jewish heritage and traditions resonated with the ethos of the young state and its diverse population. Hannukah lamp is set on a stepped rectangular platform with an attached backplate pierced with a scene of a man in traditional clothing praying at the Western wall on one side. A large strapped oil jug rests in a recessed niche in a similar stone-shaped outline. At the top, are nine circular candleholders applied to a band in front inscribed with the words" A Miraculous Occurrence Took Place Here", signifying the miracle of Hannukah which took place in Israel where this lamp was made. The craftsmanship involved in casting and patinating this brass Hanukkah lamp reflects both traditional techniques and the artistic expressions of the time. This Brass Hanukkah Lamp gives us a glimpse into the historical narrative of Israel's early years, Jewish life in the aftermath of World War II, and the cultural renaissance taking place in the newly established state.
