Mjolby Intarsia Sconces

About the Item

The design firm Mjolby Decouperfabrik was established in Sweden in 1909, the name changing to Mjolby Intarsia in 1917 as the business defined itself. The firm saw its heyday in the years between the two World Wars as the in-house architects and designers and craftsmen delivered high quality inlaid pieces and exotic veneers to all of Scandinavia. Lights fixtures, sconces, clocks, bar cabinets and trays featuring southern European characters, figures from mythology, and religious scenes were some of the most sought after. These sconces, created for use with candles, present a woodland youth who releases a dove to arrive in the hand of a fair maiden. We are as yet unsure which Nordic myth or fairy tale is depicted.
