About the Item
The pair of highly detailed, fine bronze Neoclassical wall sconces feature large urn decor at the center, with textured curved arms raising from the urn base and ending with wide bobeches.
The sconces can be wired, as the arms appear to be hollow with the openings on the back side as shown in pictures, and a switch can be installed via the small openings in the top section of the urn decor, if desired. The last owners decided to use sconces as candle holders, removing the wiring along with the hanging brackets; we are leaving the choice with the future owners and not rewiring the sconces prior to listing them.
The sconces are in very good antique condition; we are offering an identical looking pair of sconces with small openings under bobeche rims that were used for pull switch for individual lights when the sconces were still wired. Both pairs came from the same estate in Western New York; they are virtually indistinguishable and can be used as a set of 4 if needed.
The sconces are marked with stamped model numbers on the back; 3 out of 4 sconces have very faint partial stamps, but one has full stamp (3561). They are missing manufacturer's stamp ( we believe it was on the hanging brackets that were removed), but we are confidently attributing the sconces to Caldwell based on printed and online resources, auction listings, and striking technical and stylistical similarities. Highly decorative, sculptural sconces will blend seamlessly in multiple styles of interiors, from Traditional to Art Deco, Victorian, Hollywood Regency, Modern, Glam, Transitional, Collected, or Contemporary.

Edward F. Caldwell & Co.
Edward F. Caldwell & Co. was among America’s preeminent lighting manufacturers of the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries, illuminating the halls and ceilings of some of the most notable buildings in the United States. In addition to St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City and the White House in Washington, D.C., the company’s masterful light fixtures also adorn the homes of some historically prominent figures, such as J.P. Morgan and Phillip Lehman.
The firm was founded in 1895 by American Edward F. Caldwell and Victor F. von Lossberg, a Latvia native who was raised in Russia. The founders became acquainted while working at Archer & Pancoast Manufacturing Company of New York, which produced gas lighting fixtures.
In 1901 Edward F. Caldwell & Co. opened a foundry, where the owners and the lighting artisans they recruited could explore a range of metalworking techniques and design styles. Caldwell and von Lossberg quickly rose to the top of the electric light manufacturing business with their shared vision, choosing to deliver quality elegant fixtures that frequently drew on historic European designs. The firm produced magnificent lighting pieces, as well as finely crafted decorative objects and mirrors. Their neoclassical designs borrowed heavily from Baroque and Rococo styles — Edward F. Caldwell & Co. also devised Art Deco fixtures during the 1920s — and favored bronze, silver, iron, copper and brass as their primary materials.
With construction on the rise in New York in the early 1900s, not many outfits could take on large-scale lighting contracts. With over 1,000 employees, Edward F. Caldwell & Co. could take on heavy commissions.
After Caldwell died in 1914, von Lossberg carried the company until he died in 1942. Edward F. Caldwell & Co. closed its doors owing to financial troubles in 1959.
Today manufacturer’s work can be seen all across New York City — including at the Bank of Manhattan and the famous Waldorf Astoria hotel — and Edward F. Caldwell & Co. creations are highly sought after by lighting and decor enthusiasts.

Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.

A fine and impressive pair of antique American cast sterling silver tapersticks; an addition of our ornamental silverware collection.
These impressive antique American sterling silver tapersticks have an octofoil panelled form, replicating the details of a Classic English George I style.
The plain panelled waisted cylindrical capitals are encircled with protruding scalloped borders to the rims.
Each plain waisted column bears a panelled bulbous knop to the upper portion and further scalloped decoration to the lower.
The columns surmount octagonal shaped, incurved bases with a sunken well and plain collet style rim.
Each candlestick does not have a weighted base.
The underside of each base bears the maker's mark 'James Robinson' and 'sterling' standard mark.
Condition
These antique tapersticks are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The hallmarks struck to the underside of each base are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.
