Imposing Pair of Parcel Paint 17th Century Italian Wooden Floor Torcheres (7 ft)

About the Item

This parcel paint wooden floor torcheres from Italy date to the 1600s and they stand 7 feet tall. In person, they are very impressive and you immediately sense these were placed in a large and important space in their history. They have chips, losses and missing paint throughout, but they have stood the test of time and are truly grand in their state of imperfection. The layers of paint and gesso are shown down to the raw wood in areas. You can see the first layer of red bole for the gilding, over the bare wood. On top of this is a charcoal color combined with bits of silver and gold leaf on top. However, the most prevalent color is the antique white paint. Their graceful and flowing ornamentation starts at the top with a double layer of acanthus leaves. Six acanthus leaf arms in an S-Scroll shape extend out from an acanthus leaf covered bowl (these rotate and are adjustable). The decorated columns have more acanthus leaf motifs with shells on three sides. All of this rests upon beautifully decorated, stepped out, tripod panels with a margent of acanthus leaves and single flowers at the center. Three C-Scroll moldings separate each panel. Three flattened bun feet are beneath each torchere. These phenomenal Italian torcheres from the 1600s will be the focal point of any room. Each torchere will dismount into 3 sections for easier transporting. Measures: H=84 inches, base width=29, candle arm width=35 1/2.

Repaired: Some motifs have been professionally reglued. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor fading. Very fragile. The torcheres come apart into sections for easier transport. Losses of motifs throughout and wear to finish as seen in photos. Old worming and some unstable pieces of wood. Must be shipped with a high quality transporter.

Standing at over two feet tall, this 17th century pair of angel candlesticks has been carved out of a beautiful French elm wood. Because elm wood typically has an interlocked grain, it can be quite difficult to carve or split. These candlesticks were produced by a master craftsman in France during the 1600s. Our angels have long, wavy hair that extends past their shoulders. They are wearing long flowing gowns with scalloped collars and half sleeves. The loosely draped robe reaches their ankles, exposing bare feet that stand upon a round base. One leg is also visible from behind the material due to a slit at mid-thigh. Full of charm and character, this pair of iron torchere candle holders were hand-forged in Spain during the 1700s. The visible strike marks made by the blacksmith, along with the flattened pin that affixes the highly scrolled arms add subtle nuances to the 21-inch tall candlesticks.
