About the Item

Aesthetic Period Jeweled Brass Fairy Lamp Attributed to S. Clarke, England, circa 1885 A highly decorative and rare Aesthetic Period fairy lamp attributed to S. Clarke & Co., England, circa 1885. This finely cast gilt brass example is richly adorned with a pierced domed cover inset with large faceted glass cabochons in vibrant jewel tones—emerald, cobalt, opaline, topaz, jet, and sapphire. When lit from within, the lamp glows with kaleidoscopic brilliance, embodying the Victorian fascination with color, light, and exotic ornament. The design reflects the ideals of the Aesthetic Movement, with its celebration of beauty, craftsmanship, and nature-inspired motifs. The domed shade interlocks into a tripod base with scrolled feet and a finger handle reminiscent of a chamberstick. A removable brass tray at the center accommodates a taper candle or early tea light, illuminating the faceted “gems” from within. Attributed to S. Clarke, whose patented fairy lamps defined the genre in late Victorian Britain, this example is an exceptional survival in complete form. It bridges decorative function and artistic expression—a glowing testament to the taste and innovation of the late 19th century. Dimensions: 5.5” W to handle × 4” diameter × 4.5” H
