About the Item

Alimenta candle holder by Riccardo Cenedella Dimensions: D 9 x W 9 x H 15 cm Materials: Food waste based material I am Riccardo Cenedella I graduated in product design from Politecnico di Torino in 2016 and straight after my graduation I started to work for an art design studio in Turin. There I started to develop my passion for making things with my hands and became confident with using the most common tools. However, while I was in the process of creating, I started to feel guilty about making objects only to satisfy my pleasure but without a specific purpose, and be part of the conventional linear model of take-make-discard and the current approach to materiality and objects. For this reason, in 2019, I decided to study MA Material Futures at Central Saint Martins in London. Studying there I came across the theory of Charles Levi-Strauss who described the figure of the bricoleur as the one who always makes with "whatever is at hand", after research into this topic I find out that for me this means to set the limit of my practice to the use of only waste materials. Inspiration: The Carpet Matter collection is a great representation of my practice: as an alchemist, through ingenuity, persistence and hands-on experimentation, a useless material is transformed into design artefacts. While I was researching about what waste material I wanted to use for my final year project, I bumped into some carpet waste during a walk around my neighbourhood. This material grabbed my attention and when I discovered that the vast majority of carpet is made with thermoplastic materials I decided to experiment treating it as a common plastic. Through hands-on experimentation with synthetic materials, I developed a technique that allows me to reshape and repurpose this material for the creation of new design artefacts, avoiding carpet from ending up in dumpsites.

Alberto High Candleholder by Oscar Tusquets
Located in Geneve, CH
Alberto High Candleholder by Oscar Tusquets Dimensions: D 8 x W 12 x H 28 cm. Materials: Cast iron painted in matte white. Available in two different sizes: low (D 6 x W 10 x H 20 cm) and high (D 8 x W 12 x H 28 cm). Please contact us. In a Surrealist play of semiotics, melted candle wax forms the candelabra itself, inspired by two of the movement’s greatest figureheads. In this design, Tusquets was inspired by one of Dalí's approaches: a softened vision of a rigid object. Candle wax was melted, solidified, and cast in bronze—originally left with its natural finish but later glazed in an off-white shade, such that when the candle burns and drips, the wax blends with the candelabra itself. Despite the influence of Dalí, the result looked somewhat like a sculpture by Alberto Giacometti, and Tusquets renamed the object accordingly. Oscar Tusquets describes himself as an architect by training, a designer by adaptation, a painter by vocation, and a writer through the desire to make friends. Graduating from Barcelona’s Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura in 1965, Tusquets became a member of Studi Per. Together, they founded BD in 1972, and he set about designing furniture and objects, soon recognised by the Spanish National Design Award. BD Barcelona In 1972, a group of young architects and designers from Barcelona started BD. Our aim was to produce and market furniture...
