About the Item

A fine and impressive pair of antique George II English cast sterling silver candlesticks, an addition of our ornamental Georgian silverware collection. These impressive antique George II cast silver candlesticks, in sterling standard, have a plain classical English form. The plain hallmarked cylindrical capitals are encircled with bands of applied and tooled decoration. The upper portion of the waisted shaped column features a plain paneled quatrefoil shaped knop embellished with four shell designs. Each column is further ornamented with a plain circular knop lower portion and surmounts a plain circular sunken well. These decorative columns surmount quatrefoil shaped bases embellished with further shell ornamentation in a swirl design. These Georgian cast silver candlesticks do not have a weighted bases. Condition These antique candlesticks are an exceptional gauge of silver as to be expected, excellent quality and in excellent condition in keeping with age. Full hallmarks struck to the underside of each base are all very clear, the marks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver. The lion passant struck to each capital is clear in keeping with age and location. Dimensions Height 18.5 cm / 7.3". Diameter of capital 2.7 cm / 1.1". Width of base 11.8 cm / 4.6". The capitals are fitted with the original hallmarked detachable sconces ornamented with six-shell ornamentation, in addition to further gadroon decoration to the curvilinear-shaped rim. The upper portion of the waisted shaped column features a shaped knop embellished with six shell designs, reflecting the decoration to the sconce. The waisted column is further ornamented with fluted decoration, in a swirl design, with a gadroon decorated knop to the lower portion The shaped bases of these Georgian silver candle holders are embellished with a swept fluted upper portion to six large shell designs, alternating with convex oval bead motifs. The decoration to each base incorporates a bright cut engraved crest of the bust of a man in profile couped at the shoulders. The shaped rim of each candlestick features an impressive gadroon decorated border.
