About the Item
Bjorn Wiinblad (1918-2006) was a significant Danish designer, ceramics artist, and painter. From 1946 he worked with Nymolle studio in Denmark, where his international career took off and he developed his beautiful line drawing style, and from 1957 - with German Rosenthal factory, creating glass and crystal plates and objects, as well as ceramics. He also designed wallpapers, textiles, sculptures, glasses, plates, even postal stamps, and worked in interior design, theater stage design, and book illustration.
Bjorn Wiinblad for Rosenthal candle holder is called "Sommer", or Summer. Its design appears to be a continuation of the Month plates, the calendar series of plates that depicts a young couple in their first 12 months of relationship, done for Nymolle Studio, with black line drawing design on overglaze that was characteristic for Wiinblad; the Month series was very popular in 1960s. Here, the same couple appears to be enjoying flowers in a garden. The design leans more retro romantic while preserving typical Scandinavian mid-century modern elements.
The piece is signed on the bottom. It measures 4.4" in diameter and 2.25" high, with 1" opening for the candle. It was made in Germany in 1979-1980.
The candlestick is in excellent vintage condition.

His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.
