About the Item

Charta candlestick by Studio Palatin Dimensions: H 33.5 x D 16 cm Materials: biscuit porcelain. The artist’s inspiration for the Charta Alba Collection came from a series of sculptures formed from brown wrapping paper salvaged from an Amazon shipping box. The objective was to create something new out of waste material. The sculptures were created by using a single piece of paper which the artist wound around a vertical axis to create each shape. The wrinkles of the paper created a perfect foundation for the play of light and shadow. The artist, Barbara Palatin-Doyle, wanted to visually transform the supple, brown, low-grade paper into a solid, white, high-end material that would surprise the viewer. Porcelain was the ideal material; revered through the centuries, it had been nicknamed “White Gold” in the 18th century. Charta Alba means “white paper “- a pun that refers to the color of porcelain and the original shape in paper form. Charta Alba I & II were designed as a Ying /Yang pair, but can equally be used as a matched pair or as a single table lamp. The special charm of the Charta Alba lamps is created by the combination of their sculpted white porcelain bodies and the romantic diffused light filtered through the handmade Japanese Hosho paper shades. The artist chose the Vienna Augarten Porcelain Manufactory as a collaborative partner. The company is 300 years old and is the second oldest porcelain manufactory in Europe. The quality of their porcelain, especially the “biscuit”, is exceedingly high which is especially important as the unglazed finish does not hide any flaws. Barbara Palatin-Doyle is an artist, a docent for the Decorative Arts Department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the founder of Studio Palatin. Born and bred in Vienna, the artist lives and works between her home town and New York. She specializes in handcrafted, sculptural lighting in limited editions. Her passions are table lamps and candlesticks. As an artist, she incorporates materials and techniques reflecting the exquisite craftsmanship of the 17th and 18th century in contemporary design, combining art with functionality.

In a Surrealist play of semiotics, melted candle wax forms the candelabra itself, inspired by two of the movement’s greatest figureheads. In this design, Tusquets was inspired by one of Dalí's approaches: a softened vision of a rigid object. Candle wax was melted, solidified, and cast in bronze—originally left with its natural finish but later glazed in an off-white shade, such that when the candle burns and drips, the wax blends with the candelabra itself. Despite the influence of Dalí, the result looked somewhat like a sculpture by Alberto Giacometti, and Tusquets renamed the object accordingly. Oscar Tusquets describes himself as an architect by training, a designer by adaptation, a painter by vocation, and a writer through the desire to make friends. Graduating from Barcelona’s Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura in 1965, Tusquets became a member of Studi Per. Together, they founded BD in 1972, and he set about designing furniture and objects, soon recognised by the Spanish National Design Award. BD Barcelona In 1972, a group of young architects and designers from Barcelona started BD. Our aim was to produce and market furniture...
