About

A pair of continental 19th century beautifully patinated bronze lion candlesticks, stylistically in the form of architectural pillar holders know as stylobates, typically seen in the Romanesque cathedrals of Italy, such as Saint Alessandro in Bergamo for example. The original function of these bronze lions may have been as supports for a brazier as seen with Etruscan bronze lions from the 5th century BC.
