Early 19th Century Set of Two Empire Giltwood Sicilian Torcheres

About the Item

A pair of giltwood Torcheres hand carved in Sicily in 1820, they are in original conditions, with consistent signs of use and age visible on the pics. The candlesticks were decorative supports used in churches or private churches to support candles or lamps during religious services. These torch holders were typically made of high quality wood, usually walnut or mahogany, and decorated with carved and gilded patterns in the Empire style. The design of the torch holders was characterized by a circular base which supported a slender shaft. The gilding of the torches was done by applying gold leaves, which gave them a luxurious and refined look. These torch holders were very popular in Sicily during the mid 19th century when the Empire style was very much in vogue. Today these torch holders are considered works of art and are highly sought after by collectors and antique enthusiasts. They represent a fine example of Sicilian craftsmanship and the aesthetic taste of the era in which they were created.

Two Early 19th Century French Empire Gilt Bronze Candelabra
Located in London, GB
These magnificent candelabra were cast entirely of gilt bronze in the French Empire period of the early 19th century. Each candelabrum is formed as a cornucopia of scrolled branches holding four lights with drip pans, set on a single torch-form stem, held aloft by a Classical style figure. The figures, one male and one female, are shown draped in swathed clothing, with the male figure depicted holding a quill in his other hand, whilst the female figure clutches a delicate bouquet of flowers. The figures stand upon circular bases, set onto ovoid vases which featured fluted details and central bands of laurel leaf motifs. The vases themselves stand on undulating roundels formed of acanthus leaves, which are further set atop square-form plinths. Classically influenced works were popular during the French Empire period, when the Emperor Napoleon I sought to create a place in history for France alongside the ancient dynasties...
