About the Item

A finely executed Kashmiri papier-mâché candlestick, dating to the early 20th century, distinguished by its graceful barley twist shaft and richly enameled floral decoration. Standing 12.125 inches in height with a 4.25-inch diameter base, this candlestick exemplifies the refined craftsmanship associated with the Kashmir Valley’s long-standing decorative arts tradition, particularly in lacquered papier-mâché—an art form brought to prominence under Mughal patronage and later cultivated for export during the British colonial period. The entire surface is meticulously painted in cobalt blue with trailing foliate and floral motifs outlined in raised gold, set against a dark, lacquered ground. The base and midsections are articulated with turned baluster forms, creating rhythmic interruptions in the design. The helical shaft is a particularly rare and sculptural feature, with the twisted openwork providing both structural delicacy and a dynamic sense of movement. The floral decoration is rendered in the naqashi technique, where multiple layers of lacquer and pigment are applied and burnished to a lustrous finish, a hallmark of high-quality Kashmiri papier-mâché.
