Early Baroque Altar Candlesticks, Florence, dated 1627
About the Item
A pair of large altar candlesticks made of carved wood, partly with a gold patina and partly with a porphyry look, on a trefoil base with lion's paws and rocaille decoration. There are three coat of arms cartouches with a relief Annunciation scene (= Annunziata), ‘SS Annunziata’ and dated ‘Anno Domini 1627’. Six spheres and coin bands could indicate a connection to the Medici family.
The candelabras probably represent a donation to the church of Santissima Annunziata in Florence in 1627, possibly by Christine of Lorraine (1565 Bar-le-Duc - 1636 Florence, Italian: Cristiana di Lorena) due to the references to the Medici. She was married to Ferdinando I de Medici and was Grand Duchess of Tuscany.
