About the Item

Candles holder designed by Eigel Jensen (1917-2002) for Anton Michelsen. Very unique, gorgeous and sculptural geometric Scandinavian piece created by Eigel Jensen in Denmark, circa 1960. This display candlestick has been crafted in solid .925/.999 sterling silver, with high polished finish. It is composed by three elements of different heights, with space on top for candles of 13 mm diameter. Stamped, with the maker's mark, the Danish Control silver assay hallmarks, the designer's cartouche EJ for Eigel Jensen and signed, "A. MICHELSEN DENMARK EJ .925 T9". Has a measures of 5.2 by 4.5 by 4.6 inches (13.2 x 11.4 x 11.7 cm). Anton Michelsen (1809–1877) was born 1809 in Copenhagen Denmark, he completed a goldsmith's apprenticeship in Odense in 1839 before moving back to Copenhagen where he continued his training in Dyrkoph's and court goldsmith J.B. Dalhoff's workshops. He also attended the Royal Danish Academy of Arts where he was influenced by Gustavfriedrich Hersch. In 1836, he went on a long journey abroad, working in some of the leading goldsmiths in Germany and Paris. He established his own goldsmith in Gothersgade, Copenhagen when he returned to Denmark in 1841. He immediately won the attention of the royal family and the king Christian VIII charged him with executing all Danish orders with title of royal court and order jeweler. Michelsen was the only Danish goldsmith who was represented at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1855. The company of A. Michelsen, was a leading Danish jeweler founded in 1841 by Anton Michelsen in Copenhagen. It was responsible for executing all Danish royal orders and was absorbed by the Georg Jensen company in 1985. Eigel Jensen, was a Danish designer born in 1917. he began working for the renowned firm Anton Michelson as a jewelry designer. He remained with the company for over 40 years, eventually becoming production manager. He designed a wide range of products for the company and was especially productive during the midcentury years, especially the 1950s to 1970s. French empire pair of candle holders lamps. Exceptional pair of antique candleholders, created in Paris France during the imperial period of Napoleon III, circa 1870. They was designed with French empire neoclassical patterns, masterfully crafted with parts made up in gilt bronze ormolu and patinated bronze. Mounted in fluted columns pedestals carved from gray dotted Granite, with polished finish. Embellished with garlands and putties mounted in a four square and stepped bases. Major examples of the style include the Opéra Garnier (1862–1871) in Paris by Charles Garnier, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Church of Saint Augustine (1860–1871), and the Philadelphia City Hall (1871–1901). The architectural style was closely connected with Haussmann's renovation of Paris carried out during the Second Empire; the new buildings, such as the Opéra, were intended as the focal points of the new boulevards.
