About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique George III English sterling silver candlesticks made by Matthew Boulton; part of our Georgian ornamental silverware collection. These exceptional antique George III Matthew Boulton silver candlesticks, in sterling standard, have a circular knopped, tapering form to a circular domed base. The Campania shaped capitals are encompassed with embossed fluted ornamentation and retain the original hallmarked detachable push fit sconces. Each sconce is encompassed with further fluted decoration to the anterior rim and the surface is embellished with a contemporary bright cut engraved crest displaying on a nest a pelican/swan. The knops to the upper and lower portions of the tapering columns are embellished with further fluted decoration. Each tapering cylindrical column bears tiered stylised water leaf style decoration to the lower portion. These sterling silver candlesticks have circular bases encompassed with concave fluted decoration, in addition to decoration to the rim reflecting that of the knops. Both silver candlesticks have the weighted bases as to be expected and bear a green baize lining to the underside. These exceptional Georgian silver candlesticks were crafted by the revered and renowned collectable Birmingham silversmith Matthew Boulton; sterling silver items by this maker are becoming increasingly scarce and rare to the market. Condition These antique George III Matthew Boulton silver candlesticks are a superior gauge of silver and superior quality, as to be expected of this British provincial silversmith. These candlesticks may appear perfectly vertical at certain angles, as often the case with candlesticks from this period, however they can be considered to be in exceptional condition. The decoration is very sharp and the bright cut engraved decoration is very crisp. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of each base and sleeve of each sconce are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the superior gauge of silver. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these fine examples of antique Georgian silverware. Dimensions Height 24.3cm/9.57' Diameter of sconce 5.7cm/2.24' Diameter of base 13cm/5.12' Weight An accurate weight of silver cannot be provided as these candlesticks have weighted bases.
