Gingko Candleholders by Albert Paley

Stamped "Albert Paley 1989" on base. Produced in a total series of 100 pairs for the Peter Joseph Gallery. These two numbered 87 & 89 on bottom. Rare early decorative arts edition. Only one set available. Albert and his wife Frances reside in a restored carriage house in Rochester, New York whose property is highlighted by mature Gingko trees. The Gingko leaf has always been a natural reference in Paley's work and with these candle holders the iconically shaped leaf literally becomes a masterpiece. Each leaf form is fabricated, shaped and welded in place with all traces of the welds masterfully ground away. A deep black patina, adds depth to the unfolding leaves. A later version of this design was included in his recent retrospective exhibition at the Corcoran Museum of Art, In Washington DC. A museum quality work.
