Italian Antique 17th Century Hand carved wood Candelabra on a Renaissance base.
About the Item
An Italian Antique 17th Century "Mecca" gilding Wood Hand carved Bear "Orso" Candelabra on Renaissance base.
The base and the bear are gilded with Mecca, a silver gilt technique that want to simulate the gold.
The details of the carving, especially on the fur and the face of the bear are incredible. The base is a wonderful example of Renaissance motifs with a central "Mascherone" face, Acanthus leaves and curl wood cartouches. The bear is clutching the zoomorphic serpent shape candlestick holder.
This candelabra was covered with a thick layer of plaster, painted in red and transformed in to a lamp base in the early 20th Century as you can see on the two last pictures.
It has been professionally restored to the original conditions.

Its lair was the lake of Lerna in the Argolid, which was also the site of the myth of the Danaids.
