About the Item
Vintage ceramic handle holders feature stunning oxblood red glaze with light green grip glaze accent. Slight craquelure effect on the oxblood glaze contrasts with the soft, multicolored lines of the green drip glaze, spreading over it in free-form pattern. The curving lines of the slightly concave base and the rounded rim are juxtaposed with the elongated body of the handle holder. Minimal color palette and streamlined shape pf the pieces allow the high quality of the glaze to express itself over and above anything that may detract from it. The glaze pattern and sculptural outlines of the pieces work seamlessly in harmony, creating a Scandinavian Modern interpretation of Art Deco design.
The candle holders are marked with impressed MA&S Denmark and model number. Since 1931 pieces from Michael Andersen & Sons have usually been marked with the three fish stamp in various designs, either on paper label, or as an impressed mark of 3 herrings, or both; the 3 herring mark is also the official seal of the town of Ronne, where the factory was located. The lack of the 3 herring mark suggest that the piece was created in 1920s, before 1931.
Michael Andersen & Sons were founded in 1890 by Jens Michael Andersen (1859-1931) out of an existing pottery that had been operating since 1773 in the town of Rønne on the island of Bornholm, Denmark, one of the major centers of Danish pottery production. The company was thriving by the 1930s and, under the ownership of his two sons, it employed over 70 people during the 1940s & 50s. Their production was of excellent quality both in terms of manufacture and design; the renowned Persia glaze was created in the early 1930s by Daniel Folkmann Andersen (1885-1959), the eldest son of the founder. At the World’s Fair in Brussels in 1935, it was awarded a Gold Medal, and it was used into the 1960s. In 1950s the design team was led by Marianne Starck (1938-2007), who joined the company as Art Director in 1955, remaining there until 1993.

While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.
