About the Item

Mid 19th Century French pair of Louis XV gilt bronze candlesticks, made by Henri Picard/Paris: Baluster shaped stem standing on a broad round base decorated with curled cartouches, foliage and shell motifs. The stem displaying an unusual and rare light beams or sun rays decoration which also seems to spred on to the base; the stem is crestened with foliate scrolls. The vase-shaped nozzle with curvy fluting repeating the light beam decoration of the stem. Removable drip pans with godroned rim. Stamped at the bottom. Beautiful pair of candlesticks of the Napoleon III era made by Henri Picard/Paris: Henri Picard was a prestigious 19th Century fondeur and doreur, who worked in Paris between the years of 1831 and 1864. Picard was celebrated for casting and gilding decorative objects to a very high quality of production. He worked independently from cabinet makers and made mounts, complete furniture and fittings. While the craftsman was commissioned by many important patrons, Picard’s most notable achievement was to supply the Emperor Napoleon III with decorative objects, several of which are still in the Appartements Napoleon III of the Musée du Louvre in Paris. Literature: Christopher Payne: Paris Furniture - the luxury market of the 19th century, Chateau de Saint-Rémy-en-l'Eau, 2018, p. 486f.
