About the Item

A pair of 18th century Louis XVI ormolu candlesticks, each modeled as a standing cupid holding a flowering rose branch supporting the single candleholder. The figures are cast in full round, with feathered wings, defined facial features, and softly curled hair. Each cupid is draped with a short sash across the torso and secured at the waist, with a rose positioned over the chest. The expressive modeling and proportion are consistent with the neoclassical idiom of the Louis XVI period, which frequently employed allegorical and mythological figures in functional decorative arts. Each candlestick is surmounted by a single candle socket set into a flat circular drip pan, supported by a branch terminating in a rosebud. The nozzles feature beaded rims typical of Louis XVI bronze work. The rose branches are cast with multiple blooms and serrated leaves and are integrated into the cupids' hands. The design omits a separate lotus-form bobeche, instead incorporating the floral branch as a unified structural and decorative element, consistent with late 18th century naturalistic ormolu design. The ormolu surface features a matte and burnished finish consistent with mercury gilding, the standard technique of the period. Mercury gilding, also referred to as fire gilding, was achieved by applying a gold and mercury amalgam to the bronze and then heating it to evaporate the mercury, leaving a durable layer of gold. This method produces a distinct depth and variation in tone that can be observed in the present surface. The bases are circular, decorated with stylized acanthus leaves rising into fluted socles, and finished with rope and leaf moldings along the lower edge. The underside is sealed with turned wood plugs, fastened with a central iron screw, a typical construction method for the time. During the reign of Louis XVI, decorative objects increasingly reflected neoclassical influences, favoring symmetry, classical ornament, and allegorical figures. Cupid motifs were popular for lighting and decorative objects intended for domestic interiors, particularly in salons and boudoirs. Gilt bronze candlesticks of this type were commonly produced in Parisian workshops that catered to aristocratic clientele. France, Circa: 1790

Marvelous Pair of 19th C. French Ormolu Four Arm Candelabras, Signed P. Canaux
By Paul Canaux and Company 1
Located in New York, NY
A Marvelous Pair of 19th century French Ormolu Four-Arm Candelabras, Signed Paul Canaux. Paul Canaux was an incredible jeweler and silversmith, and would produce his pieces in 30 rue des Francs-Bourgeois in Paris. He originally worked for the great silversmith and plater Joseph Mégemond. Following his career with Mégemond on August 9th, 1888 he placed his own hallmark. He was a made an array of products, which included silverware, cutlery, tea sets, centerpieces, candelabras as well as many other silver and gilt-bronze objects of the highest quality. His maker’s hallmark was struck in 1892 and they changed the name to "Paul Canaux et Cie". In the 5 Generations of our business, these are some of the greatest candelabras we have ever had the pleasure of adding to our collection. This is truly an exceptional pair of candelabras. They were produced by P. Canaux, a master silversmith who made the most wonderful and outstanding pieces of silver and ormolu. These ormolu candelabras are no exception with a variety of hand-chased and hand-chiseled motifs which elevate these pieces to a different level of quality and craftsmanship. The top most finial of each candelabra is absolutely marvelous with a phoenix emerging from a cauldron of flames. Flanked on either end of each candelabra are two satyrs each holding up a candelabra arm with superior quality, each wrinkle in their faces and hair on their heads is visible. Between the candelabras is a basket of ormolu cast fruits, leaves, and vines. They are truly breathtaking and in high-relief against the main body of the candelabras. The other two candelabra arms are held up by Nereus, the Greek GD of the sea. He is known for his half-man, half-dolphin appearance with a majestic and highly detailed pair of angelic wings...
