A Pair of Fire-Gilt and Patinated Bronze Candlesticks c. 1815 - 1830

About the Item

These candlesticks couldn’t be more emblematic of the Restauration Era. The maker has taken the classical attributes so fetishized under the Empire Style and supplemented them with neo-Rococo and neo-Gothic elements. You’d think this kind of syncretism would lead to odd, uneasy results, but the French craftsmen almost always outdo themselves in maintaining an overall feeling of harmony. Thus, these candlesticks, which feature an exuberant floral motif below the bobeches but otherwise adhere closely to the acanthus-leaf-discipline of Classicism. The shafts are in black-patinated bronze and the other elements in fire-gilt bronze. (The faithful reader won’t fail to notice my tiresomely repetition of the term “fire-gilt,” but it’s really a major thing. Fire-gilding disappeared after about 1840 in favor of electrogilding. For connoisseurs, this was a loss: with electrogilding, the result is less dynamic and detailed, more heavy and dull.) Finally, note that the bases haven’t been pierced for wiring; this is a rare pair of collectable candlesticks that escaped being turned into electric lamps.
