Pair of George III Chamber Candlesticks by John Roberts & Company, 1807
About the Item
A very unusual pair of George III Chamber Candlesticks made in Sheffield in 1807 by John Roberts & Company.
Most Chambersticks are circular in form and to find a pair with a rectangular base is very unusual. As you will see from the images, the bases are oblong in form, with a raised rim decorated with gadrooning. The baluster shaped central section, is decorated with gadrooning and rises to a plain tulip shaped socket. The pull off nozzles are also decorated with a gadrooned band and the scroll handle rises to a rectangular thumb piece, engraved with an outer reeded frame. The conical extinguisher is attached to the handle and terminates in an acorn finial. The base is engraved with a contemporary lion rampant Crest. The Chambersticks are in excellent condition and are fully marked on the base, nozzle and extinguisher. As previously emphasised, it is most unusual to find square chambersticks, however Sheffield silversmiths produced very unusual Candlestick designs during the Georgian period.
