Pair of George III Tapersticks made by J. Hoyland & Company, Sheffield, 1774
About the Item
A very rare pair of George III Neo Classical Tapersticks made in Sheffield in 1774 by J. Hoyland & Company.
This is the first time we have seen this design of Neo Classical Taperstick. Both stand on a square base decorated with gadrooning. The base rises to a platform and three of the sides display a detailed Classical urn, standing on a plinth, with beaded handles. The forth side displays an oval disc cartouche with tied ribbons above engraved with an unusual Crest of a tree and running fox. The plain column dislays a spiral laurel band and rises to an unusual column capital decorated with lobing, acanthus spears and beading. The detachable square nozzle is decorated with an outer gadrooning edge and is also engraved with the same Crest which is engraved on the base. Both are in excellent condition and are fully marked on the base and with the maker's mark and sterling mark on the nozzles. Sheffield produced some of the finest, and most unusual, Neo Classical designs at this date, especially with regard to candlesticks. The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, therefore these represent an early example of silver made in this centre, which is always desirable to collectors of antique silver. Both are loaded with turned mahogany bases, which was always a sign of quality of production.
