Pair of gilt bronze Retour d'Egypte candlesticks, Empire period, 19th century

About the Item

The pair of candlesticks from the Empire period featuring caryatids are exquisite examples of neoclassical design, typical of the early 19th century, particularly during the reign of Napoleon. These candlesticks are crafted in gilded bronze, showcasing the opulence and attention to detail characteristic of the Empire style. Each candlestick features a slender, elongated column as its central shaft, rising from a circular base. The most striking element is the incorporation of caryatids—female figures used as structural supports. These caryatids are depicted in classical Greco-Roman attire, draped in flowing garments that accentuate their elegant posture. Their hair are styled in a classical manner, and they often have a serene, idealized expression, emphasizing their role as both decorative and functional elements. The gilded bronze finish gives these candlesticks a rich, golden hue, enhancing their luxurious appearance and reflecting light beautifully. The craftsmanship demonstrates a high level of skill, with fine details meticulously rendered to create a sense of refinement and grandeur, perfectly embodying the aesthetics of the Empire period. The “Return from Egypt” style Since the Battle of the Pyramids and Napoleon's capture of Cairo in July 1798, Egyptian references have become increasingly important, particularly in art and furniture. The publication of the expedition's work, “La Description De L' Égypte” (1826), abounded in new elements, inspired many artists and, through architecture and the decorative arts, transformed the environment of the French. A veritable fad swept from France across Europe to Russia. Houses, fountains and interiors were decorated in the Egyptian style. This style, contemporary with the Consulate, is called “Return from Egypt”. This style lasted only a very short time (around ten years), before being replaced by the Empire style.
