Pair of 19th Century Green Marble Egyptian Style Candlesticks with God Figure
About the Item
A late 19th century pair of Egyptian style green marble candlesticks with stately male figures on a circular pedestal. Each candlestick is composed of a full length Egyptian male figure standing with fisted hands at the sides, his athletic body only covered with a kilt around the waist. On his head the nemes or royal head cloth, surmounted by a vase-shaped candleholder, suggests his royal ancestry. The figure is standing on a circular molded pedestal resting on a square base. These figures are modeled after the famous Vatican statue of the god Osiris-Antinous, the favorite of Roman emperor Hadrian, deified after his drowning in the Nile during the 2nd century. Illustrating the Egyptomania that impacted decorative arts throughout the 19th century, this pair of green marble candlesticks, circa 1890 could add a regal presence to any room.
