About the Item
A pair of patinated bronze candlesticks designed by Swedish artist Sune Bäckström around 1940 (model 9040). Sculptural late Functionalist design with a distinctly architectural – almost brutalist – character, featuring an arched back/handle and detachable bobeches (candle cups). Model 9040 first appears in Bäckström’s catalogue around 1939–1940; the earliest verified example in institutional archives (Nationalmuseum / Svensk Form) is dated 1940, and the model does not appear to have been produced after 1944. Signed S. Bäckström / 9040. Sune Bäckström (1903–1980) was known for his refined bronze objects that combine strict functionalism with a strong sculptural expression. These examples remain in original condition with an even patina and complete with the original bobeches.
