About the Item

Rare pair of Victorian trophy candlesticks, made from deer hooves mounted on oval hardwood bases. The candle sockets are richly decorated in silver-plated brass. Each hoof bears an engraved plaque noting the time and place of the hunt: Horton Plains (Sri Lanka), June 26th, 1883. A remarkable example of Victorian trophy art, where memories of the hunt were transformed into decorative object's d’art. Note: The silver plating is partially worn, revealing the brass beneath.
