About the Item
A rare pair of hand-turned wooden candle holders designed by Germund Paaer for Kalevala Koru, Finland, in the 1940s. Crafted during the wartime period, when access to metals was limited, these pieces reflect Paaer’s inventive response to material scarcity - creating everyday beauty from available resources such as wood and birch bark.
Each candle holder is skillfully turned from solid wood and finished in glossy lacquer - one in deep ultramarine blue, the other in vivid red. The elegant silhouettes and saturated tones embody the spirit of mid-century Finnish craftsmanship: expressive, functional, and deeply rooted in national identity.
Germund Paaer (1881–1950) was the founding designer of Kalevala Koru, leading its artistic direction from 1937 until his death in 1950. He created wooden decorative objects during the 1940s, drawing inspiration from Finnish folk traditions, the Kalevala epic, and the writings of Aleksis Kivi. These candle holders are part of that rare and historically significant body of work.
The blue piece retains its original Kalevala Koru – Handmade in Finland label on the base.
