About the Item

A pair of traditional candlestick holders made by Queen Art Pewter, Ltd of Brooklyn, NY. Hand made with “Danish Quality” pewter, baluster turned columns are finished with simple capitals and beveled bases. Marked underneath “Hand Made Danish Quality Pewter. Queen Art Pewter, Brooklyn NY. Made in USA. ATC 595”. The ATC mark was introduced in 1958. Skilled pewterers and entrepreneurs, Anton Thuerer and Frederich Bauer began Queens Art Pewter from their kitchen in Brooklyn, New York, in 1930. In 1960 John Arcate took over the company after learning the trade from Theurer and Bauer. Arcate and his family continued the business successfully until his retirement in 2000. Fine pieces of pewter bearing the Queens Art Pewter seal can be viewed at the Brooklyn Museum. Arcate also made the chalice and paten for Pope John Paul’s 1979 Mass in Washington. “It was an honor to have been asked,” Arcate said. “It was the largest chalice we’d ever made. It was 6 or 7 inches in diameter. They wanted it that size so everyone on the Mall would be able to see it when the Pope raised it during the Mass”.
