Rare Pair of Gilt Metal Paw Foot Tripod Candlesticks by Lazaro Diaz, Signed 1992
About the Item
A Rare Pair of Tall Gilt Metal Tripod Candlesticks by Lazaro Diaz, Signed 1992, United States
A dramatic and sculptural pair of gilt metal candlesticks by New York designer Lazaro Diaz, signed and dated 1992. Each piece features a tall beaded stem rising to a flared candle cup, supported by tripod legs terminating in bold lion's paw feet. The richly textured base incorporates fur-like and foliate detailing, blending neoclassical revivalist forms with late 20th-century design sensibility. The design is very much in the style of Tony Duquette, who was renowned for maximalist theatrical design, rich textures, and gilded fantasy objects. Diaz’s candlesticks, with their ornate detailing and dramatic scale, strongly align with Duquette’s decorative extravagance.
Lazaro Diaz began his career in the early 1990s creating decorative objects such as these candlesticks, known for their theatrical forms and meticulous craftsmanship. He later transitioned into fine men’s jewelry and fashion, founding the Lazaro SoHo boutique in New York City. His handcrafted jewelry blends ancient Greek and Roman influences with Moroccan and Indian design. His early signed decorative pieces, like this pair of candlesticks, are now considered rare examples of his formative design language.

Artist Biography:
Lazaro Diaz is a New York-based designer who began his artistic journey crafting decorative objects in the early 1990s. By the early 2000s, he had refocused on men’s luxury jewelry and apparel, drawing acclaim for his blend of bold design and old-world craftsmanship. Through his SoHo boutique, Diaz built a loyal clientele of high-profile figures in fashion, music, and film. His early metalwork, such as these signed candlesticks, reflects the expressive ornamentation that would become a hallmark of his career.
