Rare Pair of Louis XVI Period Ormolu Candlesticks, France, circa 1770 Item # C1040271 An incredibly fine pair of ormolu bronze candlesticks from the Wildenstein Collection, they feature a fluted baluster stem draped with fruiting garlands around the swell which is edged by a band of repeating waterleaves under the acanthus decorated nozzles. These have separately cast drip-pans with beaded edges. The cove-molded circular base is decorated with draped acanthus foliage and bands of beads. Notable is the quality of the casting, chiseling and chasing, all of which is nearly of jeweler-grade with an original warm gilding over the bronze. Provenance: *The Wildenstein Collection *Christies, London, Sale 7171, 14-15 December 2005, lot 311, achieved 4200 GBP ($ 7426 USD total acquisition price) *Acquired directly from the above; held in a private Virginia collection to the present Measurements: 11 1/2" H x 5 1/2" diameter Condition Report: One base slightly out of the round. Gilding loss throughout, more pronounced around the tapered baluster where they would most frequently be handled. Very fine original condition.
