About the Item
Scandinavian Modern Ceramic Ring Candleholder by Kirsten Clemann, Denmark, ca. 1970s
A sculptural ring-form hand-crafted candleholder by Danish ceramic artist Kirsten Clemann (1932–2014), crafted circa the 1970s, at a time when Danish studio pottery was embracing bolder forms and expressive glazing techniques.
The piece combines a striking circular silhouette with carefully modelled organic details — flowers and leaves curling in gentle relief around the central candle socket, creating a work that is deeply ornamental.
The glossy glaze shifts in fluid layers from midnight black to deep ocean blue, a hallmark of the period’s experimentation with depth and movement in ceramic surfaces. Its generous scale and sculptural presence make it a true statement piece, equally suited to a pared-back Modernist interior or an eclectic collection of art ceramics.

About Kirsten Clemann
Kirsten Clemann (1932–2014) was part of a generation of Danish ceramicists who bridged the gap between functional design and sculptural art. Active through the latter half of the 20th century,
Clemann developed a distinctive vocabulary of nature-inspired motifs and robust forms, often enhanced by richly layered glazes. Her works reflect the Scandinavian Modern ethos of balance, simplicity, and craftsmanship, while also embracing the more expressive tendencies of the 1970s studio pottery movement. Today, her ceramics remain sought-after by collectors for their timeless design and tactile beauty.
