About the Item

These simply formed gilded brass candlesticks are richly decorated with colorful enamel detailing in red, black, and blue. Their restrained silhouettes provide a refined backdrop for the vibrant surface decoration, highlighting the craftsmanship involved in their creation. The age-old tradition of enameling has been preserved through generations of highly skilled artisans. The technique of vitreous enamel was developed in Venice and northern Italy between the 15th and early 16th centuries and was initially applied to precious metals such as gold before being adapted for use on silver, copper, bronze, and brass. Vitreous enamel is created by fusing finely powdered glass to metal at high temperatures—typically between 750 and 850°C—at which point the powder liquefies, flows, and then hardens into a smooth, durable, glass-like surface. The term vitreous derives from the Latin vitreum, meaning “glass.” Both decorative and collectible, these candlesticks celebrate a centuries-old decorative art tradition executed with precision and elegance.
