About the Item

A delightful and high quality true pair of Continental 19th century Louis XV st. Porcelain and Ormolu candlesticks of Hermes and Circe. Each stunning candlestick is raised by a pierced Ormolu Rocaille base, on which the figures are standing. Above the supports are the hand painted Porcelain figures of Hermes and Circe, displayed in classical style. From the bases rise two Ormolu branches with finely chased Ormolu leaves and charmingly hand painted Porcelain flowers, with one branch on each leading to a foliate candle cup and bobeche. Hermes and Circe are fellow deities who have crossed paths through their roles in divine affairs, with Hermes often acting as a messenger between gods and mortals, including visiting Circe's island to deliver commands or guidance.
