About the Item

A Very Fine Early George II Cast Taperstick Made in London in 1732 by James Gould. The Taperstick is cast and stands on an attractive stepped base, with incuse corners and a sunken well. The baluster shaped stem is decorated at various points with horizontal reeding. This piece is in excellent condition and is well marked in the base, including James Gould's unusual conjoined maker's mark. The quality of design and production is exceptional as would be expected from the maker, who was a prolific candlestick maker with workshops at the Three Golden Lions in Gutter Lane. His brother, William, was apprentice to him and also a candlestick maker. His greatest work was the great Knesworth chandelier of the Fishmongers' Company of 1752, one of the greatest surviving pieces of Rococo silver. Additional information: Height: 4.25 inches, 10.63 cm. Base Diameter: 3 inches, 7.5 cm
